UC Davis Seeking Cats for Clinical Trial

The University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine is currently seeking participants for a clinical trial concerning the use of stem cells to treat cats with chronic gingivostomatitis.

According to UC Davis, Feline Chronic Gingivostomatitis (FCGS) is a poorly defined disease that causes inflammatory lesions of the gums. The current treatments for chronic gingivostomatitis are not considered ideal and often are not without complications. It has been found in pervious studies that systemic administration of autologous feline stem cells were not only safe, but improved or completely resolved the stomatitis.

Participation requirements include cats who have been diagnosed with FCGS who have not received full mouth extractions. Possible feline participants will be examined by the Dentistry and Oral Surgery services to determine if they are eligible for the study.

The researchers stated that the study may lead to the resolution of clinical signs for the enrolled cat, possibly leading to a higher quality of life. If this study proves to be successful, it could have important clinical applications for other cats with the same condition and perhaps even be implemented in human medicine.
